Are Young Living's Essential Oils Organic?

Updated: Oct 29, 2019

I had this question come up in a class recently. Honestly, I hadn't ever thought much about rather they were organic or not. I have poured through the Seed to Seal site and found so much great info there. I was convinced by this site alone that Young Living's products were safe and healthy for our family. The more I learned about Young Living and it's founder and the pride and ownership he has the more I was convinced this was the only place I could ever purchase my essential oils and other products. The fact that members are invited and encouraged to visit the farms and to see and participate in the process of making essential oils to me, speaks volumes. Not only do they have nothing to hide, but they are transparent in what they do.

Back to the organic issue. When I was asked about them being organic, I was stumped. I mean yes, they go above and beyond to ensure the purity of their products. I knew that many of their products are Earth Kosher Certified. Yes, they use only essential oils for pest control and they weed by hand. I knew they own their farms and work closely with their suppliers to make sure their standards are maintained. Still, I never found any mention of organic in anything I read. I really felt silly that I did not have an answer to this seemingly simple question.

To the message boards I went. I posted on a couple of sites, asking the organic question. I got some great answers, but the best one was that YL products are "beyond organic." An organic certification is only good for products grown in the United States. Many YL products are sourced from other countries and therefor they can not get certified. Also, from what I have read, the cost of certification and maintaining that certification is pretty steep. That has to come from somewhere, and more than likely, it would come from you and me as we would have to pay more for the products.

The info I was able to give my inquisitive friend was enough to satisfy her question, but I continued to do some research on the subject. Here are some articles you might find helpful when researching this topic. (Which I hope you will do. I was taught to question everything and I think it is a great practice.)
